Orphanages Aren’t The Enemy

Orphanages Aren’t The Enemy
[We need to] partner with – rather than demonize – the individuals and organisations who have been caring for children within their own communities for decades. That means recognising that most orphanages are run by imperfect individuals who are doing the best that they can, in an impossible situation. Rather than the enemies of family-based care… orphanages are incredibly powerful potential allies for family preservation.
In the recent TEDx talk below, our Executive Director, Bekka Ross Russell calls for a reimagining of the relationship between philanthropists, aid agencies, and grassroots organizations working with orphaned and vulnerable children. She examines the origins of the current orphanage system, its current crisis and crossroads, and the role of privilege in aid. Then, she lays out a model to support grassroots organizations in transitioning to family-based care, leveraging their potential to become major change agents in the social welfare system.
